I'm never going to financially recover from this

    i3 with 2 cores in 2020 at 1000$ is A JOKE Intel
  • yeeeeman - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

They should have had 4 cores for i3 and i5 and 6 cores for i7...this way they could have fought with 4800U.
  • Jorgp2 - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

    Lol.

This is a premium Ultrabook, why would you compare it to a $500 craptop
  • Spunjji - Tuesday, September 29, 2020 - link

Did they do that, though? Or just point out that a dual-core CPU on a premium device is a bit of a sad joke in 2020? At least the base RAM is at 8GB now.
  • drothgery - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

and almost none of these will be sold with the i3 (as has been the case with every XPS model that even had an i3 option); it's just around so they can advertise a lower entry-level price.
  • Spunjji - Tuesday, September 29, 2020 - link

Genuinely interested in a citation for this. I'm not doubting you, just curious as to where the info comes from.
  • lmcd - Tuesday, September 29, 2020 - link

From the fact that the Inspiron exists lol
Also worth noting that i3 models are the first to get pulled from the website before generation refreshes. If you watch the Dell website, the i3 models regularly disappear as if they never existed.
  • drothgery - Tuesday, September 29, 2020 - link

Honestly, I'm just guessing. But I'm pretty sure if you're seriously concerned with price, you aren't buying an XPS (also, you typically can't configure them with reasonable amounts of memory or non-tiny SSDs with i3s).

Wait till you see the $2000 fanless.

Really Intel? A core laptop at the end of 2020? No wonder your stock got hammered, you're just not innovating.

We all know AMD is the way to go, just wish there were more AMD Ryzen 4xxx laptop options...where are the AMD options for premium displays, lightest laptop, longest battery life etc etc? AMD really needs to get on top of that cause their offerings aside from the stellar CPU/GPU are underwhelming.

Wut? Man you shills really jump through tons of mental gymnastics.

The reason we have premium displays, lightweight, thin laptops is because Intel put in the work for OEMs to release them.

"The reason we have premium displays, lightweight, thin laptops is because Intel put in the work for OEMs to release them."

Or, you know, because Apple did it first - then Intel came up with an ingenious scheme to copy the specs of their devices and "persuade" companies to reserve their limited stocks of the best components for devices with Intel inside.
  • lmcd - Tuesday, September 29, 2020 - link

Apple was only able to create the Air because Intel put in the work for low-leakage low-power small-package laptop CPUs. When "Apple did it first," Intel did the work still. Intel has had advantages in this area for so long that no one has experience trying to shrink an AMD-based board.

    https://www.anandtech.com/show/2422

Look at that article! 12 years of experience shrinking Intel's boards to the smallest, most performant designs. You're telling me that these laptop manufacturers picked up 12 years of experience in the 5 months or so between Renoir tapeout and release?

It's not like Dell can just duplicate the teams involved now that AMD is competing. It's not like the Inspiron team can just drop those releases to work on AMD-based products, or that they even have experience building the same size motherboards as XPS. AMD didn't even have experience working on partner top-tier notebook SKUs! And they still don't at the U-level! Next product cycle I guarantee one OEM will make the jump. But there's no way it was happening this cycle.

There's no "persuasion," not in the nefarious way you're implying. It's a history of execution. AMD is finally building its own history. I legitimately can't wait for the assuredly positive results.

ASUS ZenBook 14 UM425IA comes close, except they only have 1080p.. a shame, really.
Alternatives include ASUS ZenBook 14 UM433IQ, both of which are on my list for potential new machines (next to them: Lenovo Ideapad 5 14ARE05 and Yoga Slim 7 14ARE05, the latter being ~200 € more expensive).

I am really disappointed Dell's most prominent/interesting device comes with another Intel. I politically decided to drop Intel for the handling of their Spectre/Meltdown :-/

AMD is having lots of issues with supply. The XPS line are some of the best selling single models of higher end laptops. Maybe they couldn't fill the contract.

And Tiger Lake fares a lot better compared to Renoir than ICL and previous. Both have pros and cons. For most users, better single core performance once you have at least 4 cores would be more noticeable than the rare 8C load, though for my work I can saturate all the threads I get.
  • Spunjji - Tuesday, September 29, 2020 - link

They are having supply issues, but I highly doubt it has any relationship to these XPS devices. Dell have been first-to-market with Intel's 10nm mobile CPUs, so I suspect they have a partnership going on with Intel that involves some level of exclusivity going both ways.

This is nice! I wish I needed a new laptop.

Haha, this is what I also think every year when the new generations arrive.

16:10 is a step in the right direction but I'm hoping they eventually go 4:3.
  • drothgery - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

Hoping for 3:2 is one thing. But 4:3 ain't happening.
  • trivik12 - Monday, September 28, 2020 - link

This is a premium laptop almost I would say Mac of windows world. Anyway you would mostly see these sold with i7 like for icelake ones at major retailers. Plus you see good discounts at costco during holidays(we had it at $300 off last year). XPS build quality is fantastic and materials/screen used are great as well.

I'm amused by how many of the Thunderbolt 4 vs. USB 4 tick-list items amount to "is Thunderbolt" (4) or "uses an Intel CPU" (1). I'm especially amused by the apparent minimum 40Gb/s requirement for Thunderbolt 3 - were we all just imagining all those 2-lane implementations, or is that perhaps a creative fiction..?

NB: None of this is intended to excuse the absolute dropped bollock that is USB 4. If you're going to clone a standard, at least make that same standard the minimum requirement for your "new" one.

On topic for reals, the XPS 13 has always been a solid design. Even though I won't touch them since the total conversion to Type-C due to my allergy to dongles, this should be a good platform for Tiger Lake to stretch its legs.

I'd like an XPS with dual NVME storage like the Yoga Slim 7.
If that means 14" then so be it.

if you check their websit for the Inspiron 13 2-in-1, a 4 core tigerlake with xe graphic(80 core) is @ 899 MSRP, i am lookforward dell to renew the 15 inch 2-in-1 for 6 or 8 core tigerlake +Nvidia Ampere

these are wannabe macbooks. While the build quality is nice, but you quickly notice the leaf blower noise compared to fanless apple builds.
