Good read. I am in the market for a dvd burner and am looking for all the info I can get. I was wondering whether to buy now or wait for dual layer burners. I think I will go ahead and buy now. Thanks for the article.

Was it confirmed that Pioneer was using a retail A06, and not a modified version?

Because I read this at www.doom9.org on 2/5:
German computer mag c't recently reported in their print editing that the dual layer DVD-R burner shown at CES was in fact not an A06 with only a firmware upgrade, but that the hardware was modified as well. And Pioneer said that neither the A06 nor A07 could be upgraded to dual layer burning capabilities and that only the A09, due for Christmas 2004 would add dual layer DVD-R support, at 1x speed.

I have no urgent need of this so I'll probably wait until we have 16X DL DVD+RW drives at ~$125 and media at <$2/disk for a pack of 100.

    #1: good catch. fixed.

#3: Plextor's 12X 712A burns under 6 min. Samples are already here and there.

"Unless you anticipate backing up your DVD movie collection, burning data onto two DVDR-5 discs (at $0.50 a pop) under 6 minutes a piece may be a better solution"

Dont want to be nit-picky, but the plextor 708A, which is the fastest burns at arounf 8 mins. Under 10 mins would have been better.

    Great article though

    Kris,

I think this line is incorrect

'It has been six months after the first 8X DVD+R drives debuted, and we are still haven't problems finding reliable media.'

    It's more like:

'It has been six months after the first 8X DVD+R drives debuted, and we are still having problems finding reliable media.'

keep up the good work :P
